A better way to search for, select and hire construction vendors.

Construction Company

Problem / Challenge.

This is a company dedicated to construction services in the U.S. working on delivering construction solutions in different specialties such as general contracting, construction management, and construction industry recruiting.

Construction company superintendents are the ones who coordinate projects before, during & after the construction lifecycle. Part of their responsibilities is that they must contract construction vendors (e.g. portable toilets, dumpsters, temp labor, etc.) but they often struggle to find the best option. They spend a lot of time trying to search for and select the most reliable vendor.

Why do they spend so much time searching for and selecting services?

Our role & how we embraced it.

Using design thinking methodology, we tackled this challenge with an iterative process. The phases are not strictly linear, but rather each supports both the previous and following ones as the process evolves.

  • Research. In this phase we did three things to understand who the people we are designing for are: secondary research, UX competitive audit & primary research. For the primary research we conducted 5 user interviews and led 2 workshops to hear first hand from the superintendents and stakeholders’ about their pain points, goals and expectations.
  • Analyze. Using the affinity diagram tool, we gathered all information from interviews to create thematic groups in order to find patterns.
  • Synthesize. We pulled this information together to create tools (e.g. Personas, empathy map, blueprint, etc.) that represent users’ feelings, thoughts, quotes, and actions.
  • Ideate. In order to get ideas on possible solutions, we used the how might we technique to solve the uncovered problems.
  • Define. Using the MSCW prioritization method and a value proposition canvas we transformed users’ needs into MVP features to relieve their pain points.

What are the wins.

  • We successfully conducted 2 workshops and 5 user interviews to hear from construction company superintendents and stakeholders’ own voices about their daily issues.
  • We identified construction company superintendents’ frictions and hassles. Then we prioritized them into features for the MVP.
  • We delivered high-quality files: UX competitive audit, user research report, personas, empathy map, journey blueprint, and research insights.
  • We mapped the superintendents’ experience through different tools and methods to offer a solution to relieve their pain points.
